The Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform, 4G connectivity in the feature phone, thanks to the presence of a Cat X5 LTE modem. 4 (150/50 Mbps).
The Californian chipmaker announced the new Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform designed specifically to bring the 4G connectivity for feature phones, the Snapdragon brand will be used only for the premium end processors and all future products will be considered as “platforms”, as Qualcomm will also refer to software and services, in addition to the hardware components.
Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform is not actually a completely new solution since it comes from the Snapdragon 208, the modem 3G Gobi has been replaced by the X5 modem LTE Cat. 4 (150/50 Mbps). The SoC Qualcomm 205, built with the 28-nm production process, integrates a dual-core Cortex-A7 CPU to 1.1 GHz, an Adreno 304 GPU, modules WiFi 802.11 b / g / n and Bluetooth 4.1. The processor supports a camera with resolution up to 3 megapixels, VGA display at 480p / 60fps, memories LPDDR2 / 3, eMMC 4.5 storage and HD video streaming.
This is clearly low-end specs, but the platform has been developed to add 4G connectivity feature phones, not to increase performance. The X5 LTE modem presence will enable manufacturers and telecom operators to provide higher quality services, such as weather alerts, quick access to bank accounts and Mobile payments. The low power consumption is another very important aspect because in many emerging countries do not have a reliable source of energy.
Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform will find a place in the devices that will arrive on the market in the second half of 2017. The prices of feature phone will obviously be very low, despite the presence of an LTE modem which usually is placed in the more expensive smartphones.
